Hydrosalpinx: an overview with female reproductive facts

Hydrosalpinx: an overview with female reproductive facts

A female reproductive system is a lot more complex than a male’s. A male’s reproductive system is meant to impregnate a woman, but it is a woman who has to nurture a child in her womb for several months before delivering it into the world.

No denying that a woman plays a bigger role in giving birth to a child. The male sperm and a female egg combine to create a new life. People should also know some sperm reproductive facts to ensure the health of their sperm, because bad quality sperm can be a reason for infertility.

The motility, count and quality of sperm should be in a good condition to avoid sperm-related infertility. In men, it is mostly the bad quality of sperm that causes infertility issues. But in women, there are several factors that can cause infertility. One common factor among them is a tubal blockage.

What is a tubal blockage?

As the name suggests, a tubal blockage is a blockage in the tube, also called the fallopian tube. The female reproductive structure has two tiny tubes that join the ovaries and the uterus. The uterus, also called the womb, is quite stretchable. It is the place where a baby grows. So, the ovaries produce eggs, but a fertilized egg has to grow in the uterus. The fallopian tubes perform an important function which is to bring an egg from the ovary to the uterus.

But a fallopian tube can get blocked. In this case, the egg may not come to the uterus and/or the male sperm cannot reach the egg due to the blockage, which may result in infertility. There are several reasons for a blocked fallopian tube such as endometriosis, fibroids, infection, scar tissue and Hydrosalpinx. You will particularly have an overview of Hydrosalpinx.

What is Hydrosalpinx?

In the word Hydrosalpinx, hydro stands for, ‘water’, and salpinx for, ‘tube’. Hydrosalpinx is a medical condition in which a watery fluid takes place in the tube. And because of this fluid, the tube gets blocked causing issues for pregnancy. There are also other types. In Hematosalpix, the fallopian tube is filled with blood. In pyosalpinx, pus is accumulated in the fallopian tube causing a blockage.

What are Hydrosalpinx symptoms?

Some patients experience recurring pelvic or abdominal pain; while, others may have no symptoms at all. Patients who are asymptomatic and not trying to conceive may go undetected. Hydrosalpinx can affect fertility. Unsuccessful attempts of pregnancy could be considered one of the symptoms of tubal blockage. Some rare symptoms are pain during and after sex, painful periods and vaginal discharge.

What are the causes of Hydrosalpinx?

The causes of Hydrosalpinx are not very well known. The fallopian tube fills with clear fluid or serous near the ovary, which causes a blockage in the tube. The following reasons are assumed to cause this condition in the tube.

  • Endometriosis
  • Scarred appendicitis
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
  • Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)
  • Fibroids
  • Abdominal surgery

How is Hydrosalpinx diagnosed?

The doctor will suggest a test suspecting a tubal blockage as per his observation.  He can suggest any of the following tests:

  • An ultrasound. An ultrasound can be done to detect the swelling of the tube. A large swelling may indicate the severity of Hydrosalpinx.
  • Laparoscopy.  Laparoscopy is done using a laparoscope. A laparoscope is a thin tube that contains a lighted camera at its front end. Through a tiny incision on the belly, the surgeon inserts his laparoscope and has a look into the pelvic cavity including the fallopian tubes.
  • Hysterosalpingogram (HSG). The doctor sprays a special dye into the cavity of the uterus and observes the flow of the dye through x-ray imaging. Obstructed flow in the fallopian tube could indicate a blockage in the tube.
  • A sonohysterosalpingography. In this test, sterile air with saline fluid is sprayed into the woman’s uterus via the cervix. To detect the blockage, a transvaginal ultrasound is done by the doctor at the same time.
