What are fallopian tubes?
In order to understand what fallopian tubes are, we need to understand their functioning in the female reproductive system. The female reproductive system has some important internal organs. Fallopian tubes are one of them. Others are the uterus, vagina, cervix and ovaries.
Ovaries produce eggs (ovum). Every month, usually one egg is released from one of the ovaries. Then, this egg travels through the fallopian tube to reach the uterus. The egg and sperm move in the opposite direction. And most often, the sperm fertilizes the egg in the fallopian tube.
After the fertilization, the egg travels to the uterus and establishes itself on the lining of the uterus. It starts to grow there until the time of delivery. Now, you have understood the role of the fallopian tubes in the female reproductive system. Fallopian tubes play a vital role in the initial stage for pregnancy to happen.

Reasons why fallopian tubes are blocked
Blocked fallopian tubes may not allow the conception to take place, which may cause infertility. It is important for the fallopian tubes to remain open to receive the male’s sperm and to let the egg pass through. But there are causes that could create a blockage in the fallopian tube. They are:
- sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)
- endometriosis
- ectopic pregnancy
- pelvic adhesions
- fibroids
- any past surgery
Symptoms of blockage in fallopian tubes
Blocked fallopian tubes symptoms are rare. Most cases of blocked fallopian tubes do not show any symptoms. In some rare cases, a few symptoms can be noticed such as general pelvic pain, foul smelling vaginal discharge, pain during intercourse, nausea or vomiting.
Symptoms are usually noticed in Hydrosalpinx.
What is Hydrosalpinx?
Hydro stands for ‘water’ and salpinx stands for ‘the fallopian tube’. Hydrosalpinx is diagnosed as the presence of a watery fluid in the fallopian tube. And this fluid could block the fallopian tube causing infertility.

Causes of Hydrosalpinx
This watery fluid flows through the fallopian tubes but can also get collected in the tube due to some reasons including infection, previous surgery, endometriosis or scar tissue adhesions.
Symptoms of Hydrosalpinx
In many cases, Hydrosalpinx symptoms are not present. But in some cases, the following symptoms may be noticed:
- infertility
- vaginal discharge
- constant pain in the lower abdomen or aching
- pain during and after sexual intercourse
- nausea or vomiting
How blocked fallopian tubes are diagnosed?
The three tests to diagnose the blocked fallopian tubes are:
- An ultrasound test—also known as sonohysterogram. This test is similar to HSG but uses sound waves in order to get a picture of the fallopian tubes.
- HSG—it is an X-ray test. The doctor administers a harmless dye into the womb. This dye should flow through the fallopian tubes. The doctor observes the flow by using X-ray. If the dye does not flow through the fallopian tubes, there may be a blockage.
- Laparoscopic surgery—it is a keyhole surgery. The surgeon with the help of a tiny camera that he inserts through a cut observes the fallopian tubes.

Ayurvedic treatment could be the best treatment for the blocked fallopian tubes because it is not based on any surgery. Its treatment approach involves therapies, detoxification, herbal medicines and a change of one’s diet and lifestyle.
